Horyuji is a treasure trove of cultural properties.
Not only was Horyuji itself as a temple designated as a World Cultural Heritage in December 1993, but of the 125 buildings built within the precincts, 17 national treasures and 35 important cultural properties are occupied.
In addition, most of the Buddha statues / Buddhist memorials put in the temple are works of Asuka, Hakuho, and Tenpyo era, which are said to be the oldest surviving.
