Kinkakuji is a temple of Rinzai sect in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, which is registered as a cultural property constituting the "cultural heritage of ancient Kyoto" in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Kinkakuji was constructed in 1397 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who is the the 3rd shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, and the official name is called Rokuonji. In general, the building called "Kinkakuji" is famous for its luxurious appearance with gold leaf glued at the Rokuonji Temple shariden.

In addition, in 1950 the Kinkakuji was completely burnt out by arson, and the existing one was rebuilt in 1955.
