Shirakami Sanchi is a generic term for the vast mountain range covering about 130,000 ha across the northwest part of Akita Prefecture and the southwest part of Aomori Prefecture.
Here, the largest unprecedented beech forest in the world, which is rarely affected by humans, is distributed, and a valuable ecosystem such as inhabiting various species of animals and plants and naturally occurring is preserved.
It was registered in World Heritage (Natural Heritage) in December 1993.
